Perfect for school pageants, historically-themed parties, or even theme park styled historical re-enactments, there are a number of colonial-styled costumes depicting the period of the late 1700s and several notable names in history who helped (or hindered!) the United States in their war for independence from the British Empire.
Men have several options at their disposal, dressing as the brave General George Washington who went on to become the first president of the United States or the well-liked inventor and statesman, Benjamin Franklin. For historical re-enactments of key historical battles, there are also costumes representative of the colonial soldiers as well as the British "redcoats." Accessorize with muskets and colonial era armaments to give you a historically accurate look. Other accessories that might work well are powdered wigs or, if going as the writer of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson, a replica of the historical document and a feathered quill pen.
Ladies may dress as the original First Lady, Martha Washington or even as the colonial seamstress who created one of the most long-standing symbols of freedom, the American flag, with a betsy ross costume.
